When Case was about four years old, his famÂiÂly moved to GusÂtavÂus, Ohio, where he lived the rest of his life. Case?s faÂther was an acÂcompÂlished viÂoÂlinÂist, and his grandÂfaÂther, a AmerÂiÂcan reÂvoÂluÂtionÂary war veÂterÂan, taught voÂcal muÂsic. By the time Charles was nine years old, a neighÂbor gave him a small viÂoÂlin which he masÂtered long beÂfore he could read muÂsic. At age 16, he beÂgan to go to singÂing school (withÂout his parÂents? conÂsent), borÂrowÂing the moÂney from a neighÂbor.
His first voÂcal muÂsic inÂstructÂor was a Mr. C. A. BentÂley, a promÂiÂnent conÂductÂor of the day. WillÂiam BradÂbuÂry?s JuÂbiÂlee was the school textÂbook. For three winÂters in a row, Case atÂtendÂed BentÂley?s singÂing school, workÂing on his faÂther?s farm in the sumÂmer. In 1866, Case, beÂgan stuÂdyÂing with B. F. BakÂer in BosÂton, MassÂaÂchuÂsetts. He alÂso stuÂdied unÂder George Root, Carl ZerÂrahn, WillÂiam MaÂson, CarÂlo BasÂsiÂni, HoÂraÂtio PalmÂer, PhilÂip Bliss, LuÂther EmÂerÂson, George Webb, and others.
Soon afÂter Case beÂgan teachÂing, the parÂents of James McÂGranÂaÂhan moved to a house two miles from Case?s home, so the two young men beÂcame friends.
Case wrote and edÂitÂed a numÂber of GosÂpel song books in his life, inÂcludÂing:
